When we talk about refill, we often think about reducing waste. Sometimes refill means something bigger.
Corbenic Camphill Community is a thriving residential community for adults with Learning Disabilities, set in the beautiful Perthshire countryside. Alongside residents, volunteers from around the world spend a year living and working within the community, helping in homes, workshops or at the many festivals and events that make Corbenic what it is.
Last month the team sent us a neat article that had been written about their community store offering Fill refills and we all loved it!
One of the main guiding principles;
“To be a community who value the environment, treating the land upon which we live and the physical environment around us with respect and care.”
It’s an aim that shapes everyday decisions, including the cleaning products they choose, which is why every FILL delivery supports people, protects nature and creates meaningful work throughout the community.
Good Chemistry
Corbenic’s biodiverse sewage system is a living ecosystem. Millions of micro-organisms work around the clock, naturally breaking down waste. Harsh chemistry might damage that delicate balance and so choosing cleaning goods isn’t simply about what cleans best; it’s about protecting the systems beneath the surface.
Fill products allow Corbenic to clean effectively while working in harmony with the living processes that keep their wastewater system healthy.
Refills that matter
Reducing plastic waste is a huge focus for the community. Rather than every house ordering products individually, Corbenic has created a central Community Store. Bulk Fill products arrive in 20L containers, delivered on pallets and unloaded with help from the Estate Workshop team. From here, members of the team decant each product into smaller, more manageable 5L containers.
The Community Store becomes the heart of the operation. One resident, supported by a one-to-one support worker, manages purchasing and restocking. It’s a role they take enormous pride in, ensuring houses and workshops have everything they need.
The true meaning of refill
The refill system doesn’t end when products arrive. Preparing orders, refilling containers, making deliveries across the estate and collecting empties all become valuable jobs within the community.
Store tasks and deliveries provide meaningful work for 4 residents and 4 day participants, delivering to 7 houses and 9 workshops. In addition to delivering, the empty containers are collected, cleaned and reused. Just the way we like it! A simple closed-loop system that keeps products moving while creating routine, responsibility and purpose.
Keep it moving
The Community Store also supplies Fill products to the Corbenic Shop and Café in nearby Dunkeld, where visitors can refill household goods alongside handmade crafts created in the community’s workshops – including bread, pottery, artwork and woodwork.
Like the Community Store, the shop and café offer opportunities for residents to develop skills, build confidence and be part of something bigger.
Refill is always about more than replacing a bottle. At Corbenic, refill supports a living sewage system, reduces plastic waste, creates meaningful work, strengthens community and helps people live with greater independence. It’s a reminder that thoughtful systems can have a ripple effect far beyond the products themselves.
