Hey! Here’s mixtape 12. This one’s called Campfire Sounds. Music for escaping the big black smoke. Built for listening round a campfire, beneath the stars. Sounds for swishing toes in a cool clear stream or sitting in the dappled sun thinking about nothing.
I can’t help but recall my sister & I pitching camp in our back garden on a balmy Summer evening – East of Ealing – with a small orange tent, beakers filled with squash, taking turns on a Speak & Spell covered in snail trails.
Making this tape felt like a ‘Wonder Years’ style re-run of some music I’ve always lived with, without ever really listening to; it’s the sound of many summers gone-by; flooded with folk singers, protest songs & 70s songwriters. Most of these sounds come from a clutch of LPs belonging to my mum that started me out listening to records. I’ve spent a long time seeking out more obscure sounds, but there’s comfort in these tracks, all rolled up neatly into 1 hour.
Listen on Spotify. You’ll need to imagine slotting a TDK C-90 cassette into the deck as you head out on the road. Enjoy the wonders of the wild & the soulful solitude it can bring. I hope you like it. Phill
